The Buzzball

Kites are so 1904 and, soon, being out in a wide, empty field will take on an entirely new meaning. The Buzzball is a work in progress – in what looks like an oversized, tricked out hamster ball, you can control the direction of a giant, motorized pod all while sitting inside it and waiting for it to take you in whatever direction it chooses.

According to the manufacturers, the pilot’s body will remain upright in the pod when it starts moving, but will eventually rotate in any other direction the ball starts to move. The pilot can control the direction of the ball using left and right control triggers and, once the ball picks up speed, both the ball and the pilot go from making partial barrel rolls to complete rotations.

No word yet on when it will be available and for how much, but you can enter your email address on the site and receive product updates. And we’re hoping it’s at least air-conditioned, because being stuck inside a giant, rotating plastic ball on a hot day seems like it would make for a sloppy situation.

Digg.com Launches New "Recommendation Engine"

Digg is rolling out a new recommendation engine this week. The new feature's goal is to help users discover content from like-minded individuals amid the clutter of the 16k+ stories submitted to Digg.com each day.

You know how when you are browsing Amazon.com and the site suggests related products based on what you are viewing and what you've already purchased? This new Digg feature works kind of the same way. It analyzes your previous "diggs," or stories you've voted for, then lets you know what other users with similar tastes have recommended.

Loopt Coming Soon to the iPhone 3G

Wish you knew where your friends and family were at all times? Have you heard of Loopt yet?

Loopt is a mobile phone application that enables users to ~~spy on~~ see the location of their friends on an interactive map (see image below). The application also allows you to message friends in your general area and setup automatic alerts to notify you when friends are nearby.

In the last few months, Loopt has published several BlackBerry versions of its software for all major American cellphone carriers including T-Mobile, AT&T, Alltel and Sprint. Loopt also demonstrated an Alpha version of their software for the 3G iPhone at the 2008 World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC). You can sign up to be notified when the full iPhone version of Loopt is released here.

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone, then the function and features of Loopt might sound similar to Twinkle. Twinkle is a native Twitter client for the iPhone that pairs your GPS location with your Twitter posts. Twinkle also gives you the ability to add images to your Twitter Tweets.

However, fitness equipment mega-company Life Fitness has done something about that by developing a couch that actually converts to a home gym in a matter of minutes. The Otto-Bench is a combination of a multi-adjustable bench, bench press, and free weight storage space that, once converted and decorated with a couple pillows, looks just like a regular leather living room couch.

Designer Gabriel Prero is the hand behind the Otto-Bench, the winner of a Life Fitness competition challenging independent designers to come up with the perfect urban fitness machine. Grandtheft's producing skills can't be matched, while D.R. One is one of the most well respected battle DJs from Canada.

Developers and Consumers Get Ready for Apple's iPhone App Store

A massive new online business is scheduled to launch on July 11: Apple's App Store - an online hub for third party iPhone and iPod Touch applications.

Beginning later this month, developers will begin to upload apps to the store accessible by iPhone users or to a new section of the iTunes Store, sharing revenue from app sales with Apple in a 70/30 split. These apps will be in addition to the 1,700-odd apps already developed for the iPhone's Safari web browser.

One of the games people are looking forward to playing is Super Money Ball. Sega's Ethan Einhorn showed off Super Monkey Ball on stage at the WWDC. According to Einhorn, after 8 weeks of development, the developers have created 110 stages.

The new 3G, GPS-enabled iPhone should open up a world of possibilities for clever developers in the realms of gaming, entertainment and enterprise applications.

In related news, the AOL Radio app for the iPhone won for Best Entertainment Application at the 2008 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), providing users free access to over 350 online radio stations (including 150 local CBS radio stations) and more than 200 AOL Radio channels.

Hiding your valuables behind a fake set of books or in a pillowcase under your mattress is played and cliché. It’s probably also safe to say that anywhere you would hide your things is where a thousand other people in your area would do the same. Better yet, how good are you at losing your valuables? Ho Tram Strip: A Revolutionary New Resort

Believe it or not, the southern coast of Vietnam has become one of the hottest up-and-coming vacation destinations. In fact, Vietnam was identified as one of 53 “hot-spot” tourist destinations in 2008 by the New York Times, with golf cited as a main attraction for international visitors. The first phase of the project, which includes a five-star hotel resort with 1,100 rooms, a golf course designed by legendary golfer Greg Norman and Vietnam’s first Las Vegas-style casino, is scheduled to open in late 2010. Next up will be Phase 2, which includes a second luxury resort with 1,300 rooms, a casino as well as ten restaurants and nightclubs. The second phase is scheduled to open in the spring of 2011. Within 10 years the Ho Tram Strip resort will be fully realized.

Now, you're probably thinking "why would I go to Vietnam for vacation?" The answer lies in the gorgeous white-sand beaches and tropical climate, as well as a slew of attractions that have opened in the hopes of attracting Westerners. Upon completion,the Ho Tram Strip will include five resorts and an international conference center. Pimping Gone Wrong

Exactly how far do you have to go before tons of money can’t even save your tail? Billionaire Broadcom co-founder Henry T. Nicholas III pushed his luck to the point of no return when he was indicted on June 5 for being nothing short of a giant scumbag, the likes of which we haven’t seen in a fairly young, wealthy dude since that scandal with the Max Factor heir.

Nicholas, 48 and worth about $2 billion, was not only picked up for trafficking in coke, Ecstasy, and meth, but he also allegedly roofied business associates and employees, pulled Spitzers, and maintained a number of drug dens, including one below his Los Angeles home. (Someone clearly didn’t follow Biggie’s fifth rule of the Ten Crack Commandments: “Never sell no crack where you rest at.”).

He did try paying his way out, though, but the feds weren’t having it. When he was charged with securities fraud earlier on, Nicholas allegedly “used threats of physical violence and death and payments of money to attempt to conceal his unlawful conduct,” according to his indictment noted on thesmokinggun.com. It appears as though one of his employees found out about his shady activities and agreed on a $1 million settlement with Nicholas and his crew to keep his mouth shut (but if you ask me, he probably could have gotten more out of the deal). Unfortunately, Nicholas’ cockiness eventually got ahead of him and he stopped being stealthy about his drug pushing, lamely concealing his packaging with clients and dealing/smoking tons of pot on private plane flights, then eventually getting picked up.

Blackberry Hopes Thunder Will Make It Rain

Do you remember when the Blackberry used to be the cool phone to have? Until Apple dropped the iPhone on the masses everyone wanted a Blackberry. Well, the folks at Research In Motion want to get that "cool phone" label back. They've announced that the Blackberry 9500, aka the Blackberry Thunder, will be available exclusively on Verizon in September.

What makes the Thunder so special? The Thunder is the first Blackberry smartphone to include a touchscreen display. Unlike other Blackberrys this unit only has four physical keys. Those are the send / end phone keys, the BlackBerry menu key, and the back key. Not only that, this badboy receives data over the extremely fast 3G EV-DO Rev. C network. The iPhone runs on AT&T's super-slow EDGE network.

Verizon users haven't had the best selection of phones in recent years, so we expect their users are bursting with joy at this news. For now we'll have to wait until we get closer to the release date to get the full scoop on pricing and design. Of course Apple's gearing up to release a new iPhone, so by September the Thunder could be old news.

Let's start with the marvelous curves of the Brazen Sea. This fabulous vessel features the classic plumb type of bow that is taking the industry by storm. The rest of the boat has a contemporary feel without lacking the class usually reserved for more traditional designs. Yet none of the luxuries are traditional. The Brazen Sea contains a multi level glass elevator, a grand theater space with seating for 16, a spa, a gym on two floors and a hangar for helicopter. What more can you ask for?

How about a eco-friendly engine? No problem there, as the Brazen Sea is powered by a Diesel-Electric drive system capable of cruising speeds of 15 knots that makes sense both economically and environmentally. iPhone 3G and WWDC Announcement Predictions

There's no doubt that an iPhone update is imminent. But while nearly everyone has agreed on that, nobody knows anything definite about the specifics... except that the new iPhone will be compatible with the Microsoft Exchange email services. There's a link on the main Apple.com iPhone page where you can apply to be a beta tester.

In regards to the iPhone, here's what we know today:

Apple.com lists the iPhone as “Currently Unavailable.” Stock is so low that you can't buy it. Usually a good sign that a new model is coming out soon.
Apple continues to make iPhone sales deals across the globe. Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Australia were all announced with the last few months.
A 3G settings screen was found by hackers in the latest firmware update for the iPhone.
The new iPhone will most likely be unveiled during Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at Apple’s WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) on June 9th.
AT&T is prohibiting retail-store employees from taking vacations between June 15 and July 12, claiming that they’re expecting a “heavy selling period”. They implemented a similar policy last year for the iPhone launch.
AT&T executives have said numerous times that all of their smartphones (the iPhone is one of the) will support 3G networking soon.
The Apple Stores have been out of stock of the iPhone for weeks. And people are forming daily lines outside Apple stores that still have a few iPhones in stock.

Bob Dylan's 5 Best Albums

I was at my local bar the other night and someone asked me if I were ever to be stranded on a desert island and could only bring 5 Bob Dylan albums, which ones would I bring?

I couldn't answer him right away, and not because I had already had a good buzz after drinking four bottles of Miller Lite (note: I'm a lightweight), I had to think about that for a while because I really love Bob Dylan. Wait, let me rephrase that, I REALLY LOVE BOB DYLAN! For anyone even remotely aware of American pop culture over the past 40 years, it would be tough to miss the direct impact and lasting influence of Dylan's songs. I needed time to get back in touch with ALL things B-O-B!

So after spending a WHOLE week revisiting all my Dylan albums in iTunes, I compiled these 5 as the very ones I'd like to have with me if I were stranded on a desert island. And with this list I hope I can introduce the genius of Dylan to people walking around now who've never heard of the guy, or have no awareness of him beyond simple name recognition.

Converting Audio File Formats in iTunes

iTunes is much more than a digital music jukebox. It's capable of handling many different tasks involving digital media. Some of iTunes' most popular features include buying music and vidoes online, burning CDs, and syncing files with your iPod or iPhone.

But one of the lesser known functions hidden within iTunes is the ability to convert audio files.

Why would you need to convert an audio file? Converting audio file types can be useful in many different situations. Here are a few examples:

You have an AAC file in iTunes that's not compatible with your Zune that can play MP3 and not AAC files.
A WAV file needs to be emailed to a client for approval but it's too big. You need to convert the file to an AAC so it's small enough to easily send via email.
You are making a music video and want to use a song you got online as the soundtrack. However, the editing program won't import the song because it doesn't support MP3 or AAC.
You need to remove the DRM (Digital Rights Management) from an AAC song you purchased from the iTunes Store (see step #7).

Many programs that convert audio files into different formats are pretty complicated and usually cost money. But not iTunes. iTunes is simple, fast and best of all... free.
