The FBI is kicking off the new year by starting an ambitious project to create the world's largest database of biometric information on people both in this country and abroad. According to the Washington Post the federal agency will award a 10 year contract next month that will significantly expand the amount and kinds of information they receive about an individual's physical characteristics. While the FBI claims this new information is necessary for modern law enforcement, there is something extremely unsettling about the feds expanding from storing digital images of fingerprints and palm patterns to keeping tabs on iris patterns, face-shape data and perhaps even records of the way people walk and talk.

One of the concerns raised in the Post's article is whether the FBI would be able to fully ensure that the data will be secure. If you thought having your driver's license stolen was annoying, wait until a criminal steals your iris image. "Unlike say, a credit card number, biometric data is forever," Silicon Valley insider Paul Saffo told the paper. "If someone steals and spoofs your iris image, you can't just get a new eyeball." The leadership at the FBI promises that the data will be safe, but there need to be specific safeguards put in place before this system goes into widespread use.

If you're a traveler you've probably seen the use of biometric data in action. Recently the Department of Homeland Security has worked with private vendors to establish a registered traveler program which allows frequent travelers to speed through airport security after verifying a fingerprint or iris image.

The FBI's proposed program comes at a cost to taxpayers of over 1 billion dollars, and was quickly approved by Congress with little fanfare. If everything works out the way the government hopes eventually a police officer making a traffic stop will be able to run a 10-fingerprint check on a suspect and quickly find out if that suspect is on a list of the most wanted criminals and terrorists. Or perhaps a detective can compare palm prints from a crime scene to those in the massive database. Clearly many people will have access to extremely sensitive information, and it remains to be seen whether the government can keep this data out of the hands of the criminals.

Keep your eyes on this story as we move into 2008, it will be interesting to see what how the average American feels about this groundbreaking program now that the details have been made public. Biometrics may be the future, but right now they offer more questions than answers.

We don't usually think of champagne storage towers as works of art, but Porsche Design aims to change that with the introduction of the Veuve Clicquot Vertical Limit. The world famous design studio has teamed up with the legendary Champagne maker to create the most gorgeous champagne storage tower imaginable. Only 15 pieces will be made worldwide, and only two will make it stateside. Vertical Limit measures over six feet tall, and holds up to 12 magnums at a constant temperature of 12 degrees Celsius.

The stylish towers won't come cheap. Each storage unit will cost approximately $70,000. Vertical Limit combines a stylish design with a functional refrigeration unit that will keep your champagne at the ideal temperature. Every bottle gets its own door coupled with a distinctive yellow light reminiscent of the Veuve Clicquot label. All 15 pieces were fully handmade by the stainless steel specialists at Porsche Design.

Veuve Clicquot was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Murion. The Veuve Clicquot vineyards and cellars are located in Reims, France, and the Vertical Limit unit houses the beverages at the same temperature as the Veuve Clicquot cellars. You won't even have to source the champagne maker's most prized vintages, as 12 of the most sought after bottles of Veuve Clicquot are included in the purchase prize.

Each piece that is produced with the Crooks & Castles tag expresses the culture, experience and passion that Calvero and Panlilio grew up with, inspiring their love for the independent fashion/graphic brands. The collection is based around a specific culture that is enigmatic of the brand’s motto – “Behind every castle, lies a crook.”

The flagship boutique, located at 8021 Melrose Avenue, spans 1,200 square feet and is spread out over 2 levels. The main floor is for the general public to browse and shop the latest from the house collection as well as the exclusive items. The interior of the space aims to create a contemporary look combining the use of marble and wood throughout the boutique. The walls, changing each season, will be covered with artwork by renowned artists. The opening launch will feature pieces by Andy Warhol.

The mezzanine level is set up to cater to the brands VIP’s. With a strong celebrity following such as Scott Storch, Big Boi of Outkast, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nas and Kanye West to name only a few, Crook & Castles wanted to dedicate a space where their VIP clientele can come in and shop in a private, relaxed environment. VIP’s will have the chance to pick up exclusive Crooks & Castles gear and the latest books in high fashion, while not making their consumers feel like second-class citizens.

“With the demand for the brand increasing more and more over the past few seasons we felt the timing was right to open a retail space. We are very excited about building a lifestyle destination where fans of the brand can drop by, shop for the latest Crooks product and hang out with friends,” said Dennis Calvero, co-founder of Crooks & Castles. “We’re also lucky to be in such close proximity to other respected brands and stores such as A Bathing Ape and DC Shoes.”

As creators of Crooks & Castles, Calvero and Panlilio have always rooted for the villain, whether it be in a movie, a comic book, a novel, a rap song or everyday life. Growing up in Los Angeles during the 80's & 90's they became a part of this villainous lifestyle. Gangs were everywhere - the hood, the city, even middle suburbia. Most had no choice but to adapt to the environment. Some were able to escape or even channel what they've learned on the street into something lucrative. The concept was easy – “Crooks” as in criminals, pimps, hustlers, thieves, etc. and "Castles," those who got rich by becoming a crook.

New York City might be the center of culture, but many of it's residents just want to party with a little south western flair. That pretty much explains the success of Johnny Utah's, a restaurant that only opened in July of this year but has quickly become a hot spot. Located in Rockefeller plaza, this restaurant let's city guys and gals life out their cowboy (or cowgirl) dreams. The menu is full of South Western flavor with popular items such as Texan BBQ ribs, Texas brisket, Angus burgers and crispy catfish. And all of this can be washed down with selections from their bar, which includes authentic Mexican tequila, and a super spicy margarita called Mexican Heat.

All though all this talk about food probably has you watering at the mouth, the cuisine isn't exactly the center attraction at Johnny Utah's. Smack dab in the middle of the dining room is Manhattan's one and only mechanical bull. Every table in the house has a view of this bull, and anyone dining at the restaurant can take their turn to see how long they can stay on. This is definitely a source of great dining entertainment, even those who don't choose to jump on.

But don't let all this talk of bull riding fool you, Johnny Utah's still has an upscale feel to and a clientèle to match. No doubt diners enjoy the fancy meets down home decor of the restaurant with it's paisley print chairs and bull horn chandeliers. So if you're in the area and want to have a good ole' time, impress your friends by suggesting this unique eatery.

And if your looking for the hottest spot in all of NYC on Mondays, Johnny Utah's has paired with the PBR (that's Professional Bull Riders, not the hipster/steelworker beer) to host a mechanical rodeo competition for the three Mondays in December leading up to the real deal rodeo at MSG in January. As tough as the guys who practice martial arts are, they aren't exactly invincible. Mixed martial artist Sam Vasquez unfortunately passed away last Friday after injuries he sustained in a fight. He was in the hospital for five weeks after suffering brain injuries and a stroke. During the fight against Vince Libardi, Vasquez was dropped twice and was knocked unconscious the second time. He suffered a seizure and later a stroke after he as admitted to the hospital.

This is actually the first death in a sanctioned mixed martial arts fight. More details about his death were made available on the Houston Chronicle website, "Vasquez had been hospitalized for more than five weeks after being knocked out in the third round of an Oct. 20 fight against Vince Libardi on the Renegades Extreme Fighting show at Toyota Center. He lost consciousness and suffered a seizure immediately following the knockout and had been in intensive care at St. Joseph Medical Center in downtown Houston. After being hospitalized, Vasquez suffered a massive stroke and had been in critical condition."

Sam Vasquez was only 35 years old, he was a husband and also a father. Our thoughts go out to his family. And no doubt this guy was a fighter until the end.

Galleria Ferrari, the official Ferrari museum, is offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to car aficionados. The 200,000th visitor of 2007 to the Galleria in Maranello, Italy will receive a scarlet ticket, which entitles the winner and their guest to spend the day at the factory and have lunch at the famous Ristorante Cavallino. After lunch the winners will get to take a few laps at the Fiorano test track with one of the factory test drivers.

We're not surprised that attendance is booming at the Galleria Ferrari, because we've heard great things about the exhibit celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Italian sports car manufacturer. Many of the firm's iconic sports cars are currently on display, as well as posters, photographs and prizes from throughout Ferrari's history. Auto enthusiasts are sure to have a special experience, whether they win the contest or not.

If we were visiting Northern Italy in the next few weeks, we'd be sure to visit the museum and the Ristorante Cavallino. Founder Enzo Ferrari would eat at Ristorante Cavallino on a daily basis, and currently the landmark eatery contains a collection of helmets of former and current Ferrari F-1 drivers. You can be sure to see a stream of Ferraris pass by as you enjoy your meal. The Galleria and restaurant are located down the block from the current Ferrari factory.

Built in 1988 and inaugurated in February of 1990, The Galleria is open every day from 9:30am to 6:00pm with the exception of Christmas and New Years Eve. This half-scale reproduction of the Leg Lamp from the 1983 movie A Christmas Story isn't completely accurate, but for a mere $40 bucks it's probably close enough for most Christmas Story fans. And honestly, it's smaller scale will be more apt to blend in with the average living room. It certainly does with mine, never failing to draw smiling comments when a new guest first sees it.

I wonder how long it would take for HR to give me a call to "talk" if I brought my Leg Lamp to work?

My friend has been saying for years, in jest, how he'd love to have the Leg Lamp to place in the window of his house, for all the neighbors to see. And his wife has sworn that it would never happen... now she is going to kill us for getting him this for Christmas!
