R.I.P James Brown - The Funk Will be Missed!

James Brown (also known as The Godfather of Soul), was an African American entertainer who was recognized as one of the most influential figures in 20th century music.

As a prolific singer, songwriter, bandleader and record producer, Brown was a seminal force in the evolution of gospel and rhythm and blues into soul and funk. He left his mark on numerous other musical genres, including rock, jazz, reggae, disco, dance and electronic music, afrobeat, and hip-hop music.

James Brown began his professional music career in 1953 and skyrocketed to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s on the strength of his thrilling live performances and a string of smash hits. In spite of various personal problems and setbacks, he continued to score hits in every decade through the 1980s. In the 1960s and 1970s Brown was a presence in American political affairs, noted especially for his activism on behalf of African Americans and the poor.

James Brown was recognized by a plethora of (mostly self-bestowed) titles, including Soul Brother Number One, Mr. Dynamite, the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, Mr. Please Please Please, The Boss, and the best-known, the Godfather of Soul. He was renowned for his shouting vocals, feverish dancing and unique rhythmic style.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Copsidas said the cause of death was uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," he said.

Gaming Throwback - Atari 2600 (1977)

The Atari 2600, released in October 1977, was the first successful video game console to use plug-in cartridges instead of having one or more games built in.[1] Originally known as the Atari VCS—for Video Computer System—the machine's name was changed to "Atari 2600" (from the unit's Atari part number, CX2600) in 1982, after the release of the more advanced Atari 5200. It was wildly successful, and during the 1980s, "Atari" was a synonym for this model in mainstream media. The 2600 was typically bundled with two joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a cartridge game.

According to Wired.com:
The year it was launched, the $199 Atari 2600 VCS was a much-hyped Christmas gift, and by 1979 it had become a cultural sensation. When an arcade-faithful version of Japan's Space Invaders arrived in 1980, sales of the 2600 doubled. As the home-gaming industry grew, copycats like ColecoVision and Intellivision hit the scene, and Atari rolled out more-advanced consoles. But none endured as fully as the 2600: Atari didn't officially retire the box until 1992, a 15-year lifespan unheard of today.

"Reel Deal" - Boiler Room - Group Interview

Boiler Room is a 2000 U.S. drama, written and directed by Ben Younger, and starring Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel and Nia Long.

Other characters in the film were played by Ben Affleck, Nicky Katt, Scott Caan, Tom Everett Scott, Ron Rifkin and Jamie Kennedy.

According to Amazon.com:

Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money.

KiserNY - PimpWiz Certified!

One day, Kiser Barnes got up, got to work on his clothing line, and realized something both strange and exciting: Kanye West was wearing his shirt. The hip-hop icon had been given one of Kiser's designs by a DJ friend, and loved it so much that he wore it while hosting MTV's "Total Request Live". For a down-to-earth guy that says he "hasn't really been chasing celebrities" to endorse his designs, it was a pretty big coux for Kiser.

Kiser's shirts and hoodies for both men and women have also been popping up in articles and holiday gift guides for numerous magazines, including Cargo, Nylon, GQ, and Complex. There was another surprise appearance when Kiser's DJ buddy wore one of his shirts on the cover of URB magazine.

Even without worrying whose highly-publicized back is sporting his shirts, Kiser is a pretty busy entrepreneur. The former graphic designer began his line (also named "Kiser") in late 2004 with a partner, but has since taken over most or all responsibilities. What began as a Soho sidewalk sale for tourists soon warped into a full-scale occupation. Despite being a fashion rookie, Kiser successfully got his bright and graphically beautiful shirts into stores around the world. He also does business out of an immaculately designed online store, for the transportation-impaired.

So, what's the attraction with the designs? And why T-shirts? "The concept is different from a lot of stuff that's out there right now," says the designer, who cites a childhood spent in Africa as one of his many influences. He looks at everything from (streetwear line) Modern Amusement to Sonia Rykiel for inspiration, but generates a look that is inimitably his own. Kiser hopes to collaborate on a line of sneakers in the near future, and considers "a graphic life" as his motto for the designs that are equal parts skatewear, cyber-cool, and big-pimpin'. T-shirts start at $30.

So, what's it like doing what you love for a living? "Sometimes I question it," admits Kiser. "But sometimes I wake up and it's like "I have the best life. I have an impact on popular culture."

Go to KiserNY.com to check out the goods.

Make sure you watch long enough to see them give instructions on how exactly to give the properly wrapped gift. Our prediction? Thousands of women in this country are about to get a d*ck in a box for Christmas, and you all have Justin Timberlake to blame…"

Linksys Launches iPhone?

On Friday afternoon I heard a rumor that the "iPhone" was coming out on Monday, December 18th. It was an interesting rumor because most people thought that Apple would announce their mobile phone product at the January 2007 Macworld conference.

Well, a new product called the iPhone did indeed come out today but not from the company that everyone thought. Linksys announced the iPhone in this press release, not Apple. So what the hell happened? For almost a year now people have been speculating about the possibility of Apple releasing a communication product called the iPhone. But apparently Linksys, a unit of networking equipment maker Cisco, already owns the "iPhone" trademark. According to BusinessWeek.com, a company called Infogear registered the "iPhone" name in 1996. Cisco then absorbed the "iPhone" trademark when it acquired Infogear in the year 2000. Oops. Score -1 for the bloggers. We really should have picked up on that little tidbit months ago.

Just like the rumored Apple version of the iPhone, the Linksys iPhone a Web-enabled telephone handset is compatible with all major Internet chat services including Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, QQ, and ICQ.

So if Apple really has a mobile phone product in the works, they obviously can't call it the iPhone. What about a variation of a name they already own like iChat Mobile? While the name of this product may still be in question, a trail of clues about an Apple phone product have been popping up all over the Internet for over a year now:
  • In June 2005, the source code of an iTunes update contained multiple references to an Autofill phone playlist function.

  • Apple has owned the domain iphone.org since December 1999. It redirects traffic to apple.com.

  • In March 2006, a source at BenQ, a Taiwanese phone manufacturer confirmed that an Apple phone product was in the works. Why would BenQ leak info about an Apple phone to the media? Sour grapes. Hon Hai Precision, a competitor to BenQ, allegedly won the phone contract with Apple.

  • Apple's CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, might have let the 'cat out of the bag' on an Apple analyst 2006 Q3 conference call when he said the following: "As regards cell phones, we don't think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change. And [Apple is] not sitting around doing nothing."

  • According to analysts, Apple is rumored to be ready to release an Internet phone product at the January 2007 Macworld conference. "From a technical standpoint, the phone is pretty much done," said American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu. "It's a big endeavor and we believe it's beyond speculation." Apparently the rumored existence of an Apple phone has morphed from a question of "If" to "When."

Here's the official Linksys press release on the iPhone.

The Information Ring

We know this is right out a scene of Minority Report but here comes the onset of new advances in internet technology. With the influx of social networking sites like MySpace and others, one designer has taken the concept of social networking to extraordinary new heights. Yanko Design is a weblog consisting of a conglomerate of designers who showcase new developments in industrial design, architecture, technology and fashion. Hideaki Matsui, a technology designer has developed a new form of communication for the technologically advanced drifter. The information ring is an ultra-modern form of interaction. Designed to resemble an average silver band, the Information Ring stores a profile of the wearer, which is basically whatever information you want to relay to others.

When in close proximity to another wearer’s ring, the jewelry operates by transmitting the information from one ring to the other creating a sort of database of stored information. Matsui states, “The more people they meet, the more information they have”. Intended for people who frequently travel and keep semi-nomadic lifestyles, the Information Ring is like an electronic business card for the tech savvy traveler.

Another benefit of the Information Ring is that there is no hassle of providing a power supply with a battery or a plug. The ring has a heat sensor and is powered simply by the human temperature. While we encourage this new technology and the way it’s changing how we communicate with the world, we still wonder how one is going to be able to keep an air of anonymity in an open realm of communication.

Let’s say goodbye to hand shakes people, and hello to the head nod. It's a Brave New World.

i-Playaz Interactive Hip-Hop Toy

Who is the best-known hip-hop artist in the fictional land of Chub City? Chub C of course. At least that's what it says on the box. Just don't tell Hype. He's the white version of Chub C (a la Eminem). What the hell am I talking about? That's a good question.

Both Chub C (black) and Hype (white) are interactive toy characters called i-Playaz from a company called Jada Toys. i-Playaz connect to any music source including your iPod, CD player, computer or even an old school Sony Walkman. Just plug in an i-Playaz character and play some music. The i-Playaz characters will then dance to the beat and even play your music through a built-in speaker in their heads. There's also an audio output if you want to connect better speakers to your i-Playaz character.

When I first got Hype in the mail, I was already on my way out and brought the box along with me to a bar down the street. I figured I'd just test him out for this review when I got home. But while I was waiting for some friends to show up, the people at the bar kept asking me what was in the box. I was curious to see what my i-Playaz could do anyway so I took Hype out of his box and set him up on the bar. With his sideways hat and flashy bling, it's no wonder that everyone at the bar started calling him K-Fed, after Britney Spears wannabe hip-hop ex-husband. If you know someone who is trying to pull off the K-Fed white hip-hop thing, Hype will bring you and your friends hours of entertainment.

Bill Gates Buys Blogger Buzz

Want some positive blogger buzz about your product or service? Maybe you should just buy it like Bill Gates. To help promote the Zune and get some positive Microsoft buzz, Gates coughed up a dozen round trip plane tickets to Redmond, hotel rooms, and Zunes (of course) for a group of gadget and tech bloggers. He then hung out with the bloggers for an hour and answered one question from each of them. Once you factor in the total cost of this stunt, I wonder how much Gates paid per letter for a handful of blog posts?

So what did Microsoft get in return for all of this? Were the bloggers wooed by Bill's big wallet? Yep.
  • Check out the tech-news search engine Techmeme.com. Today their homepage was practically a mural to anything related to Bill Gates, the Zune or Microsoft in general.

  • While most reviewers are panning the Zune, blogs like TechCrunch [see post], Micro Persuasion [see post], and GigaOm [see post], are restricting their Zune coverage to DRM issues or posting "feel good" pieces about Microsoft.

Honestly, my criticalness against these other blogs is probably part jealously. Why wasn't MethodShop.com invited out to Redmond? Oh well, I'm an iPod guy anyway and we're too small of a blog to make much of a dent for M$. But I do give some of these bloggers credit. Most of them (not Ryan) were upfront and disclosed that Gates gave them free Zunes and paid for their flights out to Microsoft headquarters.

But on the other hand, should corporate blogs like Micro Persuasion and GigaOm, who have venture-capital financing and/or big name PR firms, really be accepting free stuff and sacrificing their objectivity?

How cheap are your personal ethics?

World’s tallest man saves dolphins in China

Thursday, December 14 2006
Shanghai, China
Lauren Weiss Reporting for Pimpwiz.com

If you ever thought something was out of your reach, think again.

Meet 55 year old Bao Xishun, a 7 foot 9 inch herdsman, listed by Guinness World Records as the tallest living man. Bao was called upon to leave his Inner Mongolian home today to save the lives of two dolphins who had consumed pieces of plastic from the edge of their pool at an aquarium in the Liaoning province of China.

Doctors were unable to reach the plastic in their bellies with their hands or their instruments, so using Bao’s 42 inch long arms, the plastic was removed from the dolphins, saving their porpoise lives and becoming not only the biggest man in the world, but the biggest hero as well. Thanks to Bao, we are two dolphins up and we have new reason to reach out, or in, and help someone, or some fish…

1984 Apple LISA Demo

Want a good laugh? This video clip from a local cable show has a rare demonstration of Apple's 1984 Lisa computer as well as some sexy 1980s hair styles. In the video, some guy named Alfred takes the $10,000 Lisa computer for a test drive. Yep the Lisa sold for $10,000. Pretty expensive for a clunky word processor. In case you are wondering, the Lisa would cost about $19,500 in 2006 dollars. Another funny thing about the video is the TV host. For some reason she talks like a robot. She's also wearing a pair of over-sized 1980s eye glasses that probably have more glass than an automobile windshield.

Warning: There is a very long 5 minute introduction before the Lisa demo clip. Alfred, the guy giving the demonstration in the video, is now a YouTube director and loves to suck up to his subscribers. He also apologizes for his 1984 haircut, suit and a recent nose surgery. But once the actual demonstration clip starts to play, you will probably enjoy it.

To the women who work in my office...I hate you

From the "Best of Craig's List". This is a yet another funny rant - so funny it made the "best of" page.

Here is a gimpse into one of our favorite parts: " Little Intern Girl- ...your coffee skills are lacking. All I ever want is a large black coffee but you seem to thing that I would rather a low-fat latte, or a caramel machiato, or even a Chai Tea.
Nope I don't want those, I just want a damn black coffee! Also, you obviously don't know your alphabet because my filing cabinet is a mess. F does not come after R, sweetie.
