While Rehab might be firing the opening volley next weekend when they kick-off their third annual summer of chaos, it is Tao that is positioning itself to run and gun in the summertime sun.

It is now official: Tao and the Venetian Hotel have formed a partnership that will give the Asian-infused hot spot their very own 14,000-square-foot outdoor entertainment facility and pool deck. The 21-and-over venue is shaping up to be both a daytime and nighttime operation with daylight hours focused on a French Riviera-style beach/pool club. The nighttime party scene expansion will serve as a fourth room to fill with the beautiful, the famous and the party-hungry. The pool will be accessible from the hotel's main pool area as well as from a stairway that is currently being constructed within the nightclub. "We expect the action to be non-stop day and night," noted Tao honcho Jason Strauss who will over-see the operational and marketing efforts of the new sun-soaked venue. "The venue will feature cabanas complete with flat-screen plasma TVs, pool tables and the other requisite perks," he continued, while adding that the 'bathtub babe' concept will certainly be extending to the new venue as well. Apparently iTunes and the iPod hold a major stake in the future of music. In just a few years, the iTunes Music Store has become the most powerful and popular music retailer in the world. How powerful? Apple has enough clout to tell the greedy big four music companies (Universal, Warner, SonyBMG and EMI) how much they should charge for music.

Apple has been battling with music companies for months now. The music industry as a whole wants to raise prices on iTunes. They feel $0.99 per song is too low. Some music companies were even thinking about no longer supplying music to iTunes in protest.

But according to an article on CNET, the record companies make more money by selling songs on iTunes, than from CD sales.

Here's a breakdown of the cost of an average CD:

Jacob Arabo, better known to pop culture fans and rap lyrics as “Jacob the Jeweler”, came to New York from Russia with his financially struggling family over two decades ago. His father was in the liquor business and had hopes that one day Jacob too would be a part of the business.

Early in Arabo’s teens, he realized he had an interest, and saw profit, in jewelry-making. After lying about his age to qualify for a job, Arabo landed his first gig. Within nine months of employment he was making more than ten times his initial $125 weekly salary; the company recognized their financial growth as a result of Jacob’s innovative jewelry design.

By the age of 18 Arabo had ten jewelers working for him and his passion for his new and budding career sent him on an ambitious journey all over the world. From Brazil to Africa to his homeland of Russia, he went where not many would go to buy diamonds and pursue his jewelry dreams.

Soon after, this determined and self-made man had his family working with him, including his three sons and his sister—a sister who changed his fate when Faith Evans walked into his small Midtown Manhattan store.

Faith asked that Arabo put a ring she liked on the side for her boyfriend to come back the next day and buy for her. Evans offered him a $5 deposit to do just that. Thomas Kramer, a.k.a.“TK”, was born into a working-class family in Frankfurt, Germany, where at a young age he began to learn the trade of trading from his diligent father who was a luminary on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

It was obvious at an early age that TK would become a profitable entrepreneur. At 13, TK published his own fully staffed monthly newspaper, Pausenzeichen (which means Recess), featuring political related articles for which he sold advertising door–to-door. At age 14 he had enough money to open his own bank account and by his late teens, TK had made his first million using his boarding school pay phone.

TK’s developing fascination with politics led him to become the head of the regional JU, the official youth organization of the conservative state party. He was later asked by the Republican Party to be a part of a televised debate and spoke out against Communism. Several years later, TK was invited to President Ronald Reagan’s Inaugural Ball.

With his parents’ support, TK came toAmerica and arrived at Harvard University as a trainee at ABD (Dresdner Bank’s sister company). TK soon transferred to New York City where he was pushed out of ABD for creating too much trading volume for his own account.

In New York City, in 1979, TK was taken under the wing of Stanley Florin, one of the all time legends of the New York Stock Exchange. It was Florin’s ill advice that costed TK his entire fortune; however, TK made his money back within a few weeks.

I received a CashFlow game from my wife, Janet, for Christmas and played a round with my adult children, Dawn and James, on New Years day. Although the instructions say to plan on spending about three hours to play the game, it took us six hours this first time.

The game is played in two parts. In the first part, "the rat race", your objective is to "get out of the rat race" by building your passive income to be greater than your monthly expenses. You draw a career card that gives you your beginning salary and monthly expenses. Those with a higher salary also have higher monthly expenses. Movement is determined by rolling dice. You get opportunities to make investments that can eventually generate the cash flow required to get out of the rat race. You can also have the "misfortune" of buying expensive "toys" or having children, requiring monthly payments that make it harder to exit the rat race. Monthly expenses can be reduced by paying off debts. The consequences of chance and choices are highlighted in the game. Progress is tracked on personal balance sheets and income statements.

In the second part, "the fast track", the objective is to win the game by being the first person to buy your "dream" or to accumulate $50,000 in monthly cash flow from businesses purchased on the Fast Track. (You have to finish the game somehow!)

Before the iPod and the iPod Hi-Fi, there was the 1993 Apple PowerCD.

The Apple PowerCD was a short-lived "portable" disc unit that could function as a stand-alone CD player, a 1X (150K/sec) SCSI CD-ROM drive, or a Kodak Picture CD player that could be attached to a television. It came with a 12v AC adapter and remote control.

Chances are you've never even heard of this obscure Apple product. The PowerCD didn't last very long and was discontinued after only a couple years. The PowerCD and the Apple Pippin are probably the rarest Apple products ever released. Even finding one of them on eBay is extremely difficult.

The Apple PowerCD was billed as a "portable" media center, but it required 6 AA batteries, external speakers, lots of cables and a small backpack to carry it all. In reality, the Apple PowerCD was completely impractical for portable use, unless you had a sherpa to lug it around for you.

Beyond its portability problems, several factors led to the failure of the PowerCD.

• The 1X drive speed was very slow. Other CD-ROM devices released during 1993 were capable of 4x speeds.
  
• Sure the PowerCD had some great features, but it originally sold for $499 in 1993. That's still expensive today. Just imagine trying to cough up almost $500 16-years ago.
  
• Depending on which model Mac you had, a specific device driver was required and many users found connecting the PowerCD to their Macs to be rather tricky.

Was the PowerCD ahead of its time? If Apple released an external DVD player that you could hook into your TV and computer at the same time would you get it?

UD: Why the love for Vegas?

BM: I think it's a great, great town. Vegas is basically the ultimate American city. Anything you want is there. And basically all that matters is your willingness to spend money. Nothing else really is important.


UD: A stupid bet you love to make?

BM: I would always bet on the Red Sox making the World Series, although that's not a good bet to make this year. Or any bet involving the Yankees losing. Wait, is your audience all New York?


UD: We’re assuming you’ve seen some stuff that epitomizes "What happens in Vegas…"?

BM: There've been so many crazy nights in Vegas. I have this buddy, Neil. We call him Big Red. One night I remember, I actually lost him at the Spearmint Rhino, a strip club. I had left, didn't hear from him, and at around 4 pm the next day I get a call from him. Turns out he had passed out on the loading dock of the place and was still there, in the VIP room, at four the next day. Another night in Vegas, it was two in the morning, and a friend and I see one of our buddies sitting at the cafe at the Hard Rock. We said, "How's your night going?" and he said, "Pretty good, it's a pretty strange night." And we said, "Why?" and he said, "You should go up and check my room." So we went up and opened the door, and there's a completely naked dwarf passed out on the couch in the living room.


UD: What’s the best itinerary for a weekend in Vegas?

BM: If you're with a group of friends and you want to party, then stay at the Hard Rock. It's young, everyone's good looking, they've done a good job of capturing the LA crowd. Have dinner somewhere like N9 Steak House at the Palms. Then go to Body English. Tryst at the Wynn is also excellent. Tao at the Venetian is pretty good. For after-hours clubs there's Drai's at Barbary Coast, which is still pretty good. Or you can go to strip clubs. At the moment there's no comparison to Spearmint Rhino. Sundays at the Hard Rock pool there's a party called Rehab, and it goes on from three in the afternoon all night. So that's where everyone hangs out during the day. Sunday night there's a pool party at Light at the Bellagio.
