Born in Chicago to conservative parents, the one-time Esquire magazine employee decided to remain in the Windy City in 1951, when the company moved to New York City.

Within two years, the bunny magazine, named Play..boy, hit newsstands with Marilyn Monroe on the cover.

Over the next 50 years, Hugh Hefner -- known to millions of admirers as Hef -- has shaped society all over the world via his avant-garde, compelling and tasteful magazine.

While Hef has managed to live the life that is often synonymous with the American Dream, the fact of the matter is that he earned every single minute (and girlfriend), given everything that he has been barraged with.
